“COLOR IN ARCHITECTURE – A MEANS AS POWERFUL AS THE GROUND PLAN AND THE SECTION. OR BETTER: POLYCHROMY, A COMPONENT OF THE GROUND PLAN AND THE SECTION ITSELF.”
-Le Corbusier
For Le Corbusier colors had a room shaping effect. Color, he felt, was a way of only allowing exactly what you wanted to show to appear in the conscious, regardless of whether that was a house, an interior or an object. Particularly blue tones were seen by the architect as creating airy space. He referred to earthy tones such as ‘Umbra’ as shadow colors, ideally suited as background colors, and to red ochre shades as fixing presence and standing out.
